Leap Year Rules

A year is a leap year if it meets these criteria:

• The year is evenly divisible by 4
• EXCEPT if it's divisible by 100, it's NOT a leap year
• UNLESS it's also divisible by 400, then it IS a leap year

Examples: 2024 is a leap year, 1900 is not, 2000 is.

Why Do We Have Leap Years?

• Earth takes 365.25 days to orbit the Sun
• Without leap years, our calendar would drift by ~6 hours per year
• After 100 years, seasons would shift by ~24 days
• Leap years keep our calendar aligned with Earth's orbit
• The extra day is added to February (the shortest month)
